Servant of God
Five or more years after a holy person’s death, investigations begin locally and at the diocesan level into a potential saint. Documents and witnesses attest to a person’s martyrdom or their life of “heroic virtue.” Those under serious, formal consideration with strong cases are called “Servant of God.”
Venerable
The dossier for a Servant of God is put before the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints at the Vatican, with a “postulator” overseeing the process of the potential saint. The theologians, bishops, and cardinals can then approve and advance the person’s cause to the pope, who can declare the declare the person “Venerable.”
Currently, Fr. Querbes is VENERABLE, and we may pray, perhaps with the above prayer, for his miraculous intercession and his beatification.
Blessed
The faithful can then privately pray for the intercession of the “Venerable” person. If a miraculous event occurs, evidence can be gathered and submitted. If it’s found to be scientifically inexplicable, this miracle is cause to beatify the person and declare the person “Blessed,” which allows for public veneration, at least in the local setting. (Those found to be martyrs are declared “Blessed” and need evidence of just one miracle for sainthood.)
Saint
Upon the occurence of a second miracle, the same process can then affirm that this person is a “Saint,” believed to be in heaven and interceding for us.
The pope then “canonizes” the person, and they can be publicly venerated throughout the global Church.
