Exploring God’s Invitations with Associate John Ohlendorf
John is from downstate Illinois and is a retired English teacher who taught in the St. Louis area. Late in his career, much of his family settled in Bourbonnais, IL, and John began visiting more and more often and then set himself up to retire there. Over the last several decades, John became a very active parishioner at Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Viatorian parish in town, and Viatorians invited him to be part of the explorations to establish lay association in the US. Then in 1999, John committed as one of the first five American associates. Here, our 92-year-old Viatorian shares his backstory, his first encounters with Viatorians, and what Viatorian association and religious life is – and isn’t – to him and potentially to others discerning to join us. Each episode in this seven-episode series follows one of the seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching. Within each episode, clips of interviews with Viatorians and Viatorian-connected peers unpack parts of the CST theme and offer questions for reflection.
Additionally, each episode comes with a discussion/reflection guide that individuals and groups can use to dig deeper into each CST theme.

Viatorians are committed to walking with youth and people who go underserved. To strengthen and sustain us in this mission, we looked to kindred spirits in Church ministry to share insights and advice from outside our sponsored ministries.
In Bolder Dreams, we follow Fr. Querbes’ wise advice that “we are bolder when we dream we’re doing God’s work,” and seek to learn from faithful ministers seeking to build the Kingdom of God across the Church.
