The archives recently acquired two publications written and taught by Fr. Philip Kendall, CSV. Fr. Kendall passed away this year on June 20th in Kansas City, Kansas where he served as Judicial Vicar for the archdiocese until his retirement in 2004.

The first publication, entitled “A Course in Christian Spirituality” is a 65 page booklet and is divided into 10 sessions. They are as follows:

1) Introduction to Spiritual Theology
2) Principles of Spirituality
3) Eastern Monasticism
4) Western Monasticism
5) Mendicant Spirituality
6) The Rhineland Mystics-14th Century
7) The English Mystics-15th Century
8) The Spanish Mystics-16th Century
9) Modern Spirituality-France-17th Century
10) Modern Spirituality

The second publication, “A Course on Prayer and Spirituality in the Christian Life” is a 50 page booklet that was published in 2002. The course description is as follows:
“An exploration of prayer and spirituality as the response of the believer of God’s call, including the foundations of the spiritual life, and opportunity for reflection on one’s own spiritual journey, and the great themes of the Lord’s Prayer. The course includes an overview of Book IV of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.” It is written in 4 chapters:

1) The Revelation of Prayer, including an exercise on the writings of St. Augustine
2) The Tradition of Prayer, including an exercise on the writings of Pere de Caussade
3) The Life of Prayer, including an exercise on the writings of St. Teresa of Avila
4) The Lord’s Prayer, including an exercise on the writings of Madame Guyon
