Fr. Christopher Glancy, CSV: Teacher, Protector of Faith, Bishop.

It was a bittersweet moment, when members of the Viatorian Community gathered with outstretched arms to bless their former brother and priest, Bishop-Elect Christopher Glancy, CSV as he prepares to leave for Belize.

In February, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Fr. Glancy as auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Belize City-Belmopan. Formerly, he served as pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Corozal Town, Belize, since the Viatorians first established their mission there, in 1998.

“I think it is an affirmation of me — and of the Viatorians — and of the good work we’ve been able to do in Belize,” Bishop-Elect Glancy said.

Fr. Thomas von Behren, provincial, said the Viatorians would miss his involvement and leadership in their community, but they understood that he had answered a call to serve.

“We are all called to serve the Lord where he leads us,” Fr. von Behren said. “We are called to respond — and respond with generosity.”

Bishop-Elect Glancy added that the hardest part of his decision was accepting that he no longer would be living in community with the Viatorians.

“I know what I take with me is from all of you,” he said. “I thank you for your support, prayers and friendship. I will always be a friend and member of the Viatorian Community.”

Bishop-elect Glancy will be ordained May 5 at St. John’s College in Belize City.
