Through treaty, Canada had designated the United States as a “safe third country,” meaning they could turn away asylum seekers from the US because it was a safe country. With the changes in immigration policy and enforcement in the US, the Viatorian Provincial Council joined a growing list of Canadian and American organizations encouraging the Canadian government to withdraw from this agreement. Foundationally, the US is no longer a reasonably “safe place for refugees,” according to the statement.
