The Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES) has been mobilizing advocacy on behalf of a labor and youth organizer named Geovanni Aguirre.
The Provincial Council, Clerics of St. Viator Province of Chicago, signed the statement demanding his release and just treatment.
As he faces criminal charges and penalties without due process or full legal rights, CISPES released this update:
Beloved labor union and youth organizer Geovanni Aguirre, who has been unjustly imprisoned in El Salvador for over 4 years under the State of Exception – falsely accused, as hundreds, if not thousands have been – of being involved in a gang, when clearly that is not the case.
Right now, Geovanni is being processed for a collective trial and is a grave risk of being unjustly sentenced to decades in prison without access to an individualized judicial review of his case. This case is emblematic and highlights the arbitrary and inhumane nature of the mass/collective trials that the Bukele government is promoting as a successful security policy.
We write with a quick update that the attached materials have been shared with the Salvadoran press along with these photos of Geovanni from his facebook and recorded audios of the some of the quotes in the press release. The letter itself will be delivered shortly to the tribunal and relevant government institutions.
Please help us uplift this action TODAY and in the days to come. If you’d like to see the attached documents as google docs, you can find the final letter here and press release here.
