Good Friday took on new meaning for students at Cristo Rey St. Martin College Prep. The day that Christ suffered and died on the cross served as a springboard for worshippers of all ages to pray and walk in solidarity for those suffering in our society, especially immigrants in detention, who are separated from their families.

They started out their day at the Broadview Detention Center, operated by the Chicago office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), where they prayed the rosary for those being deported that day.

Next, they joined with Saint Viator High School students to help prepare the new Marie Joseph House for Hospitality — sponsored by the Interfaith Committee on Detained Immigrants — that next month will begin welcoming immigrants being released from the detention.

Later, they traveled to Chicago, to participate in the Good Friday Walk for Justice, co-sponsored by the 8th Day Center for Justice and the Viatorian Community. The prayer walk is modeled after the stations of the cross, that unites the suffering of Jesus with the justice struggles of today.
