Viatorians support the Interfaith Immigration Coalition (IIC) and its commitment to enacting fair and humane immigration reform that reflects our mandate to welcome the stranger and treat all human beings with dignity and respect.

Consequently, they and members of the IIC were outraged that the Trump administration has proposed a historically low refugee admissions goal of just 15,000 for the 2021 fiscal year. They also violated U.S. law by not consulting with Congress on the goal before the start of the new fiscal year, and by failing to sign a formal goal before the statutory deadline. The resettlement program has ground to a halt, leaving our global neighbors in harm’s way. Here’s their latest press release.

Immigrants also report medical abuse in detention. Last month, a whistleblower reported that immigrants at Irwin Detention Center (GA) were being pressured into non-consensual surgeries, including hysterectomies and other gynecology procedures. These horrific abuses are the latest in the U.S.’ long history of eugenics and genocide, particularly of immigrants; those who are incarcerated; and Black, brown, and Indigenous peoples.
