Don’t look now, but a handful of students at Cristo Rey St. Martin College Prep have been working this summer to restore some antique hand tools. Think saws, mallets, chisels and ratchets, for starters.

They’re being restored for a new class in the fall called, Engineering and Wood Science. The new elective course advances the school’s interest in offering more engineering options for students. Just last month, CRSM hosted a STEM summer camp for girls.

In this 2-minute video, Teacher Michael Appel explains why students will be using these vintage tools to make such projects as birdhouses, benches and cabinets. “Students will get to put in sweat equity to complete their projects,” he says.
