Less than two years after moving into its new building, administrators with Cristo Rey St. Martin College Prep in Waukegan, IL opened the first part of its Phase II building campaign: its chapel.
“One of the silver linings of the pandemic is that we’ve been able to accelerate our construction process,” says Michael Odiotti, Principal.
Though not fully complete, the chapel drew students in on Nov. 3, the feast of the school’s patron saint, St. Martin de Porres. Students were invited to stop by during a study hall or lunch, light a candle, take time for quiet prayer and contemplation, and listen to music.
Just last week, the new chapel also welcomed students for prayer on the Feast of Christ the King or, in Spanish, La Fiesta de Cristo Rey.
“The name of our network, and the name of our school, is an invitation and a challenge to see the world with God in charge,” says Jim Dippold, Campus Ministry Director. “Viva Cristo Rey!”
The chapel is of particular interest to the Viatorians since as an endorsing community of the school, its priests and brothers often lead prayer services and liturgies. However, Phase II plans also include a gym with a stage, fitness area, locker rooms, additional classrooms and faculty work space. Here’s a video introduction:
