VYCTurn Chicago into a torture-free city!
9/1/2011

That’s the rallying call for several members of the Viatorians as they join with the Illinois Coalition Against Torture (ICAT), in calling on the Chicago City Council to make Chicago a torture free city. Together, they are circulating a petition to present to the City Council in September when Alderman Joe Moore introduces a resolution against torture.

ICAT points to incidences of torture carried out at the hands of Chicago police --- including the recent trial of former Police Commander John Burge --- as well as the many victims who have been incarcerated in Illinois prisons as a result of false confessions extracted under torture. What’s more, prisoners are locked up in conditions of solitary confinement and sensory deprivation, that Viatorians say amounts to torture.

The resolution states that as a world class city, Chicago needs to accept and practice global legal and moral standards.
