Viatorians Launch Year-Long Service Opportunity
12/2/2011
The Viatorians are launching a year long service opportunity for young adults --- the Viatorian Service Corps --- offering them the chance to make a difference in their own lives and in the lives of those around them.
Specifically, the program offers young adults --- ages 19-25 --- the opportunity to serve through a network of relationships with members of the regional Viatorian Community. The program is based in the Kankakee-Bourbonnais region of Illinois, where the Viatorians first began their ministry in the United States.
Throughout the year, members of VSC will share life together as an intentional community. The aim is to accompany young adults as they seek to live out their Catholic faith through the Viatorian charism.
“Our program is strengthened through the active participation of the Viatorian Community,” says Bart Hisgen, VSC director. “Our program will be a success if we are available for God to work through us together --- especially in service to those on the outskirts of society --- because we are the Church in motion.”
Service opportunities will include serving in low-income rural and urban communities, connecting with Spanish-speaking immigrants, and helping with parish ministries. Volunteers will live in community and connect regularly with Viatorians for prayer and events. The first VSC “class” will enter in August, 2012 and serve through July, 2013.
