Viatorian Priest and Commissioned Artist: Fr. Donald Huntimer, CSV
11/22/2011
Every afternoon, Fr. Donald Huntimer heads to an art studio tucked away in the Viatorian Province Center in Arlington Heights. It offers him a perfect getaway to pursue his passion: oil painting.
Now retired from serving as chaplain to the Benedictine Sisters in Tucson and volunteering in prison ministry; Fr. Huntimer can spend more time devoted to his painting. He only took it up at age 40 and has completed more than 400 since then.
Currently, Fr. Huntimer has been commissioned to create a painting of St. Viator Church, located on Addison Street on the West side of Chicago. The historic parish, started in 1888 by the Clerics of St. Viator, continues as a vibrant church and school, and a beacon in the community.
Architectural paintings are not his forte, he readily admits, but trying to capture the church’s intricate details presents a good challenge. Typically, he prefers to paint birds, flowers, landscapes and other scenes from nature --- even galaxies --- but he hopes his image of the first church started by Viatorians in Chicago, transcends his technique.
“Good art can engender a transformation of consciousness,” Fr. Huntimer says. “It can
elevate one to a religious plane of wonder, awe, and reverence.”
